The SI! Programme

A school intervention programme aimed at children between 3 and 16 years old with one clear objective: to demonstrate that the acquisition of healthy habits from childhood reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and improves quality of life in adulthood.

The main cardiovascular risk factor, both in adults and in children, is obesity and associated factors such as diabetes and hypertension, the result of improper nutrition and low levels of physical activity. Other risk factors for cardiovascular disease, typically studied in adult populations, are also beginning to be present in Spanish children.

The SI! Programme has come about from the desire of Dr. Valentín Fuster to promote cardiovascular health with the goal of teaching how to maintain suitable living habits throughout life.

Public health research has indicated that the initiatives of health promotion should start in childhood to achieve a lasting and effective change in behaviour and school-based interventions are the most effective.
